Re-grading List Ready Soon

(By Telegraph

WELLINGTON, June 30.' In a few months' time the first regrading of the Givil Servants of the Domdnion for the past eight years will have been completed and be ready to put into effect. The last regrading under the statute was made in 1929, and the next was due in 1934. This was postponed, however, by special Act of Parliament because of the financial conditiona exisiing at that time and even after the present Government was elected it was not clear what would be done. Matters were held tip for some time because the uecessary authority had not been given by the*Executive Council. The future method of control of the service was for some time unqertainy the intention of the Labour Government towards the Commissioner system was unrevealed and possibly unformulated and in any case at one time there were no commissioners to uudertake the work of regrading. After the appointment ot the new commissioners in August last, whcn JMessrs T. Mark and J .H. Boy'es took over control oi the service,. a decision was made to proceed with the regrading and the necessary authority was Gazetted in September. From that date both the Commissioners have been busy touring the country, going into the most out-of-the-way spots in some eases in order to expedite the work. The usual inspectors have also been on the road assessing the value of jobs and the Commissioners themselves have i'ollowed up their backblocks investigatious by sittings iu main centres. At the same time the Treasury has been at work preparing estimates of the effect whicli the regrading will have on the linances of the country. The post office and the railway servants are, of eourse, included in the ambit of the new reassessment of positions and the whole task is expected to be finalised in a few months now,
