SIRES OF THE SEASON

Pombal Lasi January Mr T. Shields purchased the imported sire, Pombal (1), and has placed "him under the charge of ,Mr \v. A. Stevens, Pakipaki, Hawke's Bay, where he will this forthcoming season be at the disposal of breeders. Pombal (irnp) is a half-brother to Limoud and is bred on similar lines to that highly successful English sire, Phalaris. Pombal is oue of the finest looking horses ever imported into New Zealand, being built on powerful lmes and at the sarne time showing an abundance of quality as well as being well perserved and possessing untold vitality. He was imported by Mr G. M. Ourrie, of the well-known Koatanui Stud Wanganui, but uni'ortunately for Pombal his half-brother, Limond, had already estabiished himself as the premier sire of Zealand and Australia with the result that comparatively speaking, Pombal never received a chanee. During the six years at the Koatanui Stud he served only about 50 mares.. In begetting such line performers as Eisteem, Monastic, Prince Pombal, Farmer, J'litland, Worship, Epigram Eupator and Davolo this sire has done' well under the circumstances. Davolo during the present racing season has proved himself to be one of the best handicap horses i» the Doininion and the South IslanjPs best handicap performer. Pombal comes from the No. 1 family , a numerai that only in the last decade or so has become a fashionable sire's line as previousiy many authorities held' No. 1 as being a, non-sires' line, but strange to say it is only from three branches Pilgrimage, Parrafin and the Sunshine' roots, that No. 1 has become successful and fashionable and it is from the latter branch that Pombal descends. Pombal comes from a yery strong paternal sire's line, claiming the undefeated Pommern as his sire. Poinmern is at present doing stud duty in Engjland at 400 guineas a mare. He vvon tiie ilichmond Stakes, Imperial Produce Stakes, The Two Thousand Guineas, the English Derby, run at Newmarket when the Great War was raging, September Stakes, JLimekiln Stakes and June Stakes, to tlie value of close Oli .016,01)0, wliiie his progeny, in iirst money, havo accumulated £150,000. Pommern was got by Poiymelus i'rom Merry Agnes, who comes i'roln a iamous staying lme through Agnes (16). Poiymelus was the son Of Gyilene oy liona Vista by Bend Or by Doncaster. Now this sire's line is perhaps the strongest to be found in the world to-day. Poinbal's dam, Lindal (sold for 4.100 guineas and dam of Sandai sold to the Argentme for 3,000gus • and haif-sister to Greeba, the dam of Eager, (sire of Gioaming's dam), and to Cherry, the grand-dam of Phalaris, sire of the Epsom Derby winner iViauna and twice the leading sire in England, Lindal was got by Kendal (16) so that Pombal has a double ci'oss of the famous No. 16 blood, from Sunrise (dam of Dunmure winner ' of £9,000 and the champion sire of Austria; and sister to Spring Morn, the grand-dam of Martian and Boniform) by Springfield (12) from Sunray (half sister to Napoli, the dam of Orvieto, Laveno and Ponza (dam of Positano) by Kiug of the Forest (61) i'rom Sunshine (winner of tlie VVoodcote Stakes, Doncaster Champagne Stakes, Ascot J uly Stakes, etc..

etc., and dam of Bushey Parb and Helioscene), by Thormandy (4) from Sunbeani (winner of the Leger) , by Ohanticleer (23) from Sunflower (ancestress of Gay Crusader, sire of the defunct Gay Shield, the higjhly successful imported sire, Gay Crusader won the Two Thousand Guineas, Derby, St. Leger, etc.), by Bay Middleton (1). Pombal himself won the Lincoln Chaplin Plate (for three-year-olds), 1J miles, the Nottingham Chamber Plate 11 furlongs, the Leicester Plate, 1 mile, the Lingfield Chiddingstone Plate 1 mile, and the Liverpooi Bridgeman Plate, 1-j- mile, and many other important minor placings. For the convenience of owners of wet mares Pombal will visit farms where situated as long as advice is given early enough to give the stud groom time to make arrangiements and thus not disappoint. This no doubt will be welcomed by owners living at a distance, saving them the expense and responsibility of transportilig a mare and a young foal or a mare, lieavy ir> foal. The stud groom, Mr W. Stephens. of Pakipaki, Hawke's Bay, is on thc Hastings Telephone Directory, and will be pJeased to furnish any further iulormation.
