Decision To Hold Annual Gathering
(From
MA JVAlt u , uast iNignt. Always a popular event in past years, the annual sports meeting of the Makaretu Sports Club is to be revived. A decision to this elfect was reached at a special general meeting of tlie club last Saturday when the following resolution was adopted: — . "That the annual fixture of the Makaretu Sports Club be resuscitated and held at the Sherwood grounds (kindly loaned by Mr H. W. .White) ou a date to be arranged." In speaking to his motion, Mr C. Thomsen stated that pressure had been brought to bear on him by several members who considered that the time was now opportun© to revive the once popular fixture provided the grounds were available. He had made provisional application to the Axemen's Union for the permit on King's Birthday in December and had also interviewed Mr White with reference to the use of the grounds on that date. Mr White was quite agreeable and offered to co-oper-ate with the members in. resuscitating the meeting, In view of a recent announcement that the King's Birthday would now be celebrated in June, Mr Thomsen was of the opinion .that the date was not suitable for a sports gathering and sought permission to alter "the wording or the notice of motion accordingly. Mr D, Howse seconded the proposition which was ultimtaely carried unanimously. The amendment adopted was that the meeting be held on a suitable date between January 20 and 30, 1938. in support of the motion members expressed the opinion that a meeting held near to the date of 'the Waipukurau A. and !P. Show, Gymkana and Axemen's Carnival would' be to the advantage of both bodies. In view of the date of the King's Birthday having been altered, it was suggested that a deputation should wait on Mr White to ascertain if the proposed date in January would be acceptable to him. Mr G. Severinsen moved and Mr D. Howse secpnded the proposition which was carried. Messrs C. and F. Thomsen, D. Howse amd J. W. Watkins were appointed a's the deputation. Mr A. A. Pederson advised members that Mrs E. R. White wished to donate a, silver chalienge cup for the Hunters' competition, to be knojvn as the E. R. White Memorial Cup. It was resolved that the appreciation and thanks of members be recorded and that a communication be sent to Mrs White conveying the appreciation of the club.
