CIRCLE ACTIVITIES OF THE HASTINGS GUILD
The meeting of the musie circle of the Hastings Townswomen's Gnild held last week was a humorous evening, the inembers each contributing an item to the programme. Before the programme commenccd Mrs A. F. Glenny, guild president, e.xpressed appre^-Htion of ^the work done by Mrs G. Mu?sicano during her period as the circle leader and regret was frlt at her resignation. The circle, however, were exceptionally fortunate in having as their new leader Miss B. McHutchon, and with her musical ability and ready help an interesting time for the circle was anticipated. Members were also pleased . to hear .that Mts Whetstone had consented to be the de-puty-leader. The programme opened with two humorous songs by Mrs Whetstone, after whieli Miss McHutchon an Mrs Jenkinson sang two duets. Atra Young gave a song in character, and then a musical eompetition was held, the winner being Mrs J enkinson. Mrs Hill sliowed humour in advertisements," and; after a very jolly community sing Mr Burton played two banjo solos. Supper was eiijoyed by everyone, and before departing tlie members who were taking part in the preparationb for* the birthday party next month, were asked to rehearse at the Assembly Hall on Wednesday next at 2 o'clock. JMiss H. Ford presided over an excellent attendance of members at the June meeting of the literary circle at which each, member was asked to speak on her favourite author. Mrs Jackson read from Marv Ellon Ghase's book. "Silas Croket"; Mrs Drummond spoke about L. M. Montgomery and one of her latest books, *"Ann of Windy Willows"; Mrs Hill chose Jeffery Farnol and his ad venture sicries; Mrs Corrigan chose the splen■did characters in the books bv Ann Biidge; Mrs Taylor read froin'PMllip Gibbs' book, "The Gity of Refuge"; Mrs. Jones spoke on the writings of Robert Blatchford; Mrs F. Deans recomluended Beverley Nichols and Clare Bheridan. Discussion f ollowed on the circle 's ittm for the birthday party of the Guild. and arrangements wore made for the first praetice. - *
