On Saturday afternoon the Hawke's5 Bhy compctition took place at Napier betAvcoii the Hastings and Napier teams of tho Junior Red Cross for the Lady McLean Shield, resulting in a win for tho Napier A team. The examiners commented on tho very high standard of work skown by the four teams. competing, thu moaibers of which were as follows:--Hastings A team.— Mrs Roborts (captaiu), Mrs Robson (adjutant), Misses B. Svringer. rl'his being the society 's first social cvtniiig since the Coronation, Mr tipence took the cpportunity of congratulaling Miss King, th© secretary of the soc.ioty, on rcceiving Coronation hoiiours and extending to her the good wisbes of the society. Aliss King suitably replied, and went ou to tell of a very nice ietter of congratulation she had received from the Hastings Women 's Commuuit.y Club, which slie greatly apprecia.ted, The Srpeaker also said that much praise was due to Sister A*orman for the great advancemcnt made in the classes she had taken over. Sister Stringer then gave a short but very, interestiug talk on Red Cross work generally, which was listened to with much interest by tliose present. Uuring tho evening Madame Mercer Tendered many delightful solos, and ex-c-ellent eloeutionary numbcrs were given by Miss Valerie Lewis and Mr F. Harns. Girls from Hukarere School gave sevcral Maori action songs and poi dances, these proving immensely popu- ' lar. The winning team was then presented Witli tho shield by Air Spence, and Mr Bedford presented bars which had been won ,by several of the members. Uean aud- family, who have been residents of Clive for some time, and who are leaving tliere to reside on their farm in the ' Te Ivuiti district, were farewelled at a gathering of friends held at the honio of Mrs W. Dean, Clive. A very happytime was spent by' all present. The drawing-room, which had been- transfomied into a reception room, was prettily decorated with pink carnations, and bowls of autumn leaves and berries. A memory competition was won by Alri V/. Tucker, who received a d^inty to1-' k. • , . ' . Uuring the aftornoon, Alrs R. Deati, who was adcompanied by her daiighter, Miss L. Uean, were both presented with boautiful bouquets. After tea had been served and greatly enjoyed, tlie opportunity was taken to preseiit Mrs Uean with a gift from some . of her- Clive, friends.
