Convincing Victory Over Celtic A TWENTY-POINT MARGIN A surprise was cre^ted by Hastings H.S.O.B. in' soundly defeating Celtic by 23 points to three. Tbe game was at all tjcjgs interesting, with Oid Boys mauR| fnll use of tbe wind in tbe first spell and securing an 18— o lead. After tbe change-oyer Celtic easily ha!d the advantage territorially, b^t were cnable to pierce the excellent defcnce of Old Boys. The teams were as follow: — Hastings H.S.O.B.— McCarthy; Palmer,. Holt, Apsey; Devine, Patrick; Alexander; Rankin, Denton, Shrimpton; Ford, Fargher. Irwin, Ashman: Thompson. ' Celtic.— -Harvey; Gibb, Pullen, Hannahj Beid,. Halljgan; Tomoana; Bennett, Mataifa, McCort; Hollis, Piper, Maaka, Hannigan; Bowers. Old Boys started off with their now customary opening and within a few minutes the forwards had broken awav in a loose rush, Thompson and Ashman leading^ the field. The latter beat the , oppo&ition to the ' touch-down ns the ball rolled between the posts and McCarthy made it five. A few minutes iater McCarthy added three points with a penalty goal. Celtic launched a great attack, the forwards battling well, but though on frequent occasions they were within an aCe of sCoring they. were kept at bay. Backs and forwards in turn hurled themselves at the defence, but slowly : Cld Boys cleared and took up the at- ] tuck. Success came their way early, Ford scoring} behind the posts as the result of fast following up. A little lutex Ashman scored a ■ well-earned try, and as ■ both were converted by McCarthy, Old Boys led 18—0 at half- ! time. ' Celtic settled down promptly upon 'esamption and were quickly in the Old Boys quarterway where, Hollis missed* Iwo attempts to open Celtic 's seore sheet with a penalty and Pullen did likewise, his kick striking an upright, : hna a further attempt a little later saw the ball this time go under the b*ir.
