Shayes corroborated the indieation given recently that under certain conditions .of training he might be the most likely candidate for the vacant place in singles in our Davis Cup teams, writes J. E. Collett in The Field. Shayes beat J. S. Ollifif in the semifinal of the men's singles, 0—8, 6—1, — 2, 8—6. The score indicates the fluctuations to which his game is subject. In the fourth set, in which he was at 5 — 4 and 5 — 6, he showed an increase of flghting quality under pressure and a growing ability to control a tendency to petulance at his own errors of timing.
