Letters to the Editor

Landmarks Sir, — I would ask the people of Hastings, men and women, to make a little journey to the centre of the town: to that Civic Square which contains the memorial to our fallen soldders. They will see there another memorial: "a bleeding piece of earth ' ' where but two days ago stood a noble line of trees. These trees are to be replaced, we hear, by formal gardens. fountains and buildings, planned by an architeet and town-planner from Wellington. Doubtless he turns ^uch things out by the dozen. Sir, I woUld ask three questions. First: Need euch wholesale sacrdiice of trees take place I Second: Have wo not architeets of great proniise in our own town who would work with more love and understanding? Thirdi Should not the citizcns and ratepayers of Hastings be consulted before living beauty and landmarks are removed? — Ycurs, etc., A. CITIZEN. Hastings, June 24, 1987.
