BASKETBALL DANCE

Our Own Correspondent.)

Socially Successful Function

(From

OTANE, East Night. Although there was a good attendance at the Otane Basketball Club's annual dance, the number present was not as large as in former years, owing no doubt to the extremely wet night and the majiy strong counter-attrac-tions. Nevertheless a most enjoyable time was spent and those attending were well rewarded for braving the uninviting elements. The hall looked most attractive with its decorations of palms, ferns and foliage in which were intermingled hand-made poppies in the club's colours (chocolate and canary), while huge bowls of beautifu] chrysanthemums were effectively used on the stage wbere the musicians were accommodated. Mr. Gordon Redward's or,chestra played popular music for the dances and extras were kindly contributed by Mrs. Colquhoun and Mr. Redward. The duties of M.C. were carried out most efficiently by Mr. T. E. Colquhoun. Several novelties were introducod. A very large number entered for ti*.waltzing competition, which resulted iu a tie between Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Colquhoun, Mr. Neville Mundell and Mrs. Kust and Mr. Rainshaw and Miss M. Bartlett. In the waltz-off Mr. Rainshaw and Miss Bartlett were adjudged the winners and were heartily applauded. A spot waltz was won by Mr. W. August and Miss C. Heicock. A very appetising supper of sweets and savouries was served by,the club members, who one and all had worked hard to make the evening a suceess, and if the financial result did not quite reach expectations, socially the function left nothing to be desired, all present spending a very happy and pleasant time.
