Press Association.)

Plans For Extension DESIGN OF HALL

(By Telegrapli—

WELLINGTON. This Day. When interviewed, the chairman of the Carillon Society, Mr A. Cowles, gave particulars supplied by the designer, Mr Gummer, of the National Memorial Hall, which it is proposed shall be added to the National War Memorial, the carillion tower; Wellingfton. The design of ' the hall is based on the winning design of the National War Memorial, of which the tower forms a part. Without the hall the tower has an untinished appearance from behind. The bottom ehamber of the tower was designed to form the vestibule of the hall. The hall is to be 61 feet long, 38 feet wide and 26 feet high. On each side of the entrance there will be a statue of a 6oldier on guard. The interior will be somewhat like the naVe of a church with flanking recesses as side chapels. The far end of the nave will be prolonged into a shrine containing marble statuary typifying the spirit of saerifice. Coloured stone is isuggiested for the walls, rubber for the floor and the nave and marble for the floor of the sanctuary. As the hall will be partly below the ground, the lighting will be from above, and so arranged as to fight the sanctuary and side recesses where individual memorials of various units will be placed. An altar will be placed before the shrine, and on this a vellum roll of honour with the names of all the dead in the war will be lighted by a lamp of memory above.
