THE "BROWN BOMBER"

Loiiis , a ' "Knock-Out Artist" The career of Joe Louis has been a meteoric one as he has been engaged in fistic waxfare, for quite. a short ■period. He is very lucky to get a title match as he dropped a decision to Max Schmeling last year and it was thought that the German would be given an opportunity to regain the title which he lost to Jack Sharkey several years back. Louis is a knock-out artist, having dropped Oarnera, Baer, Sharkey, "Rav Impelltiene, and most of the other well-known American heavyweights, but lesser lights like Bob Pastor have gone the distance with him solely by adopting defehsive tactics. Most- of liis opponents have been beaten - before entering the ring, but Schmeling showed that he • can ibe beaten when he whipped him so convincingly last- year.

Since he began to meet top-fiight boxers in 1935, Joe Louis has had 22 fights, and he won all but one against Max Schmeling, who put him down for the full count in the twelfth round. In IS of these bouts Louis won by the knock-out, and the average duration of these contests was less than four rounds apiece. Louis' record for 1936 and 1937 is as under:- — 1936 ( January 18 — Charlie Retzlaff, Chic-i "ago, K.O., one round. June 20— Max Schmeling, New York, i lost, K.O., 32 xounds. I August 18 — Jack Sharkey, New York,i K.O., three rounds. i September 22 — Al. Ettore, New York, \ K.O., five, rounds. . ..October 10 — Brescia, New York, K.O, ! •three rounds. j - 1937 • • January 12 — Leon* Ketchell, Bu-ffalo, K.O., two rounds. ■ January 30 — Bob Pastor, New York won, points. February 17 — Natie Brown, Kansas City, K.O., four Tounds.
