"the -plainsman " — epic of america. "The PJainsman/' which sereens at the State Theatre ^to-night, has been peopljed wjth a cast worthy of its character. Glry Cooper is "Wiid BRl" Hicock, James Ellison is' "Buffalo Bill," Jean Arthur is the Westtoughened "Calamity" Jane, and John Miljan the heroic General Custer. Direction is .'undamenlajly responsible for the high slandard reached by "The Plainsinau." The filrv obviously, is the work of a master, and perhaps only Ceeil B. de Mille could have made it. Eacb scene is directed with a clear and complete knowledge of popular demands in sereen entertainmenl ; eaeh scene is so deftly haDdled iu fbc iudividual sense as to beeoaie itsell' a minor masterpiece, yet blended harruoniously into the greater master piece oi' the whole production. To call "The Plainsman" an epic is to do no more than justice to a geuuinely great achievement. It is a colourful slice of history, moulded into a gripping story, dressed and treated with a tliorough understanding, and served iu a masterpiece of sereen production. ,
