Two Men Charged with Assdult

BLENHEIM, Last Night. The story of a sensational fight between three men on the street opposite the Picton war Memoriai oh the afternoon of Sunday, JUne 6, Which resulted in One Of thcm being admitted to the Picton Ihosiptal with estOnsive injurics, was unfolded before Messrs. G. M. Blizzard and J. L. Jones, JiP.'s, at the Picton (Jourt and hospital to-day. On the ipformation of the police Henry William Smith and Leslie Wilson, both dmployees of Oxley's hotel, were charged with. assaulting Charles Herbert Brogdeif sO as to CauSe actUil bodily harm. Brogden's evidence was taken at the hospital, where ihe is recovering from a broken leg, fib and fracttired iiOso, Which were the chief injuries he received in the fetruggle, in Which it was alleged kieking was resorted to by the combatants. Both accused pleaded not guilty and were coinmitted for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Gourfc at Blenheim. Brogden 's evidence showed that he was working &t the Terminus hotel while his wife, from Whom he Was separated, Was employed at Oxley's. ' He made advances to re-establish ainicable relatiohs bilt discokered that she was frieU'll^ with Wilsoh. As a result of a meeting With ihis Wife thet quarrelled and he struck h6r. Later, he alleged, the two accused arrived and a fi'ght ensued. He was knocked down and kicked even after he told the ttttackerS his leg was broken. The police produced a statement in which the aCcused admitted flghtihg bnt denied kieking Bfdgden. The reason they intCrfeted Was that they had been tOld that h6 had kiiocked his wife down. ACCusCd Were alloWed nomiUal bail.
