DRAB MARKET FOR BREEDING EWES
SIow Trading at Stortford To-day WETHERS SELL WELL A particularly drab market prevailed fox breeding. ewes at Stoxtford Lodge to-day, when trading, except for a very few good1 qtiality lines, were exeeptionally difficult to trade. Wethers and hoggets, liowever, sold quite Well.For the ewes there was very little competition owing to the shortage of ±eed. Many of the entries wero aged sorts and very poor-mouthed, being in low condition, showing the effect of a hard autumn. Many of these lines hua been held toq lo.ng and in their hard condition offered little pXospect to likely purchasers. Good"'quality mixedagCd entries made 29"/-, and others were down to 116/6, SUorii wethex hoggets, ■Woll-grown, made 18/6. The best woolly entries brought 20/-. and small-grown owe hoggets made 21/9. Realisations were as follow:— A line of 165 medinm-growh twotooth wethers, ineluding sevetal small sOrts fairly well woolled and in inedium condition* sold well at 24/-. On aceount of the Maroney Estate, Pakipaki, 206 mixed-aged ewes in lamb to Southdown rams brought to 29/-. These ewes Were well framed and in good Order and carried a good slipe. An entry of llve-yeax ewes depastnred with • Southdown Tams, an earlylambing proposition but in poor oxder, failed to attraet a bid. On aceount of Mr. W. McKay, Waikare* 145 medium-grown, well-woolled Romney wether hoggets, in forward OrdeX. and very healthy, sold at 19/2. An entry of small-frUmCd tWo-tooth wethers, in light order, not having done well through the autumn, sold at 20/4. Tlie quality was nneven. Froin the same source, 150 woolly Romney wether hoggets, smgll to fee-dium-groyn, in medium" condition, quite bright and should carry over well, realised 17/-. An entry of 98 store to forward ewes, a fattening proposition, brought 17/-. These ewes were brdken moUthed and made a good sale. In from Maraekakaho, a line of mixed-aged ewes in lamb to Southdown and Romney rooms, but in rather poor order, were slow to sell at 17/8, These ewes were showing ,up well in .lamb and were in good enaugh order for lanibiUg. On aceount of Mr S. T. Beleber, Waimarama, 86 two-tooth to fivoyear ewes depastured with Southdown rams,' an early-lambing pfoposition, brought 28/9. These ewes were in splendid order, having been well done, and were showing up %ell in lamb, A line of small-gfowfi Wodlly ewe hoggets, in light order, brought 21/4. On aceount of "Mr J. McKay, Waikare, 124 Romney wether hoggets, smaller grown than an earlier offering from this draft, but in hardy order, realised 16/5. On aceount of Mr S. Allen, Waifnaj rama, 115 sound-mouthed ewes depastured with Southdown rams sold at 20/6. From Maraetotara, an entry of ewes in lamb to Southdown rams, poor mouthed . and showing hard condition, were hard to sell at 16/3, On' aeeount of Mr E. D. Holt, a line of emall-grown Doivn cross meaty hoggets, in very good ofder, made 20/-. In from Kahuranaki, hnd offered on aceount of Mr J. C. Anderson, a line of very small-grown t)own-eross hoggets, in light order, sold at 12/10, In from Elsthorpe, a line of five and six-year eWes, in lamb to Southdown rams, brought 15/-. These Cwes Were poorly moUthed but were carrying a ■ good slipe, On aceount of Messrs Jones and Richmond, Kawera, a line of mediumgrown well-woolled Romney wether hoggets in very good, healthy order and very bright, sold at 19/-. Oh. aceount of the Saine veridors, a line of early-shorn Romney wether hoggets, well grown and in forwaXd, good-doing order, brqught 18/6..
