— Press Association.)

Powder Will Not Be Used

(By Telegraph

WELLINGTON, Last Night. • ' ' Mjlk powder will not be used in any place wbcre thero is fresh milk avaiicvblc, " said Hon. P, Praser when refcvring in an interview to-night to thc milk-for-schools scheme. "It is correet to say that in many parts of the cpuntry the milk-in-3chools schcmo which is bencflting daily some 80,000 children in the Domiqion. is meeting with difficultv so far as supplies are concerned," added the Minister. "One of the reason.for this has been the untoward season and the other is that the milk supplievs of varioug country towns are not prcpared for such an increased demand op their supply. The regult is simply that winter milk has not been available. "It is anticipated that in a few weeks these difficulties will be overcome tp a large extent. The practice set by the department in obtaining milk whereyer possible from certifled tuber-cnlin-tested herds with pasfceurisatiop in addrtion has been adhered to yp to the present. "It is true that the questipn of sybstituting dried whole-milk whero fresh milk is not available is under consideration but at present devejopments aro only in the experimental -stage. The various whole-milk powders, including malted-milk-powder, are being examined by the Health Department. Samples aro being analysed and reported on. 9?hes§ subshtutes will not be used un-» less it is established that they are good wholesome food approximatjng a.s far as possible in nutrftive value to fresh milk. • . "In the native school in Tokaanu Dr. H. B. Turbott, medical o^eer of health for Waikato, is superviping the provigion of whole malted milk. I am infgrmod that it is impossible to hnd supplies of fresh milk for native children thqre, so whole malted milk was substituted. . I feel therq is every reason to believe the trial will be succe^sful from thp nptritive point of view, but quite delinitely miik powder will not be used in any place where there is l fresh milk available."
