Plebiscite on B-Station Purchases DIFFICULTIES IN WAY The Hastings Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting in Hastings last night. The president, Mr. H. W. C. Baird, occupied the chair and gave a comprehensive review of tbe year's affairs, The election of officerg resulted: President, Mr. H. W. 0. Baird; vicepresident, Mr. W. E. Bate; conmiittee, Messrs. H. G. Harvey, J. Wilson and W. H Wood; auditor, Mr. A. C. A. Hyde It was decided to send congratulations to Lieutenant-Colonel A. J. Manson, M.C., on his appointment as Sergeant-at-Arms in the House of Representatives. Mr. W. A. Whitlock moved a vote of thanks to the president and officers, and this was seconded by Mr. Harvey and carried. Votes of thanks wero also passed' to tbe seeretary and to the i'ress. The Chamber held its monthly meeting at the conclusion of the annual meetiug. A reply received, from the Minister of Rai'lways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, assured the Chamber that its communications regarding the danger of railway crossings in Hastings would be fully investigated and that the views of the Chamber would be considered. Consideration of a request made by the Qhamber that a plebiscite of listeners should be held before any action was taken in purchasing the B-class stations was promised by the Minister of Broadcasting, the Hon. F. Jones, in his reply to the Chamber. There were inany difficulties, said the Minister, in the way of carrying out the Chamber's suggestion, but it would be given every consideration. The reading of the letter was greeted witb laughter, and one memher interjected: "Are they msuperable difficulties?" Mr. F. E. Smith was appointed as tlie Chamber's representative on the proposed CCifton Domain Board., Mr. G. Roach urged that in the new year sqme means should be found for setting up an executive to deal witb the less important matters so as to ailow the Chamber more time for the consideration of more practical matters. Mr. Harvey suggested that it would be a fine gesture to arrange a lunclieon for tho Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison. He paid a tribute to the work which Mr. Maddison was doing for the town. Other members shared the same view and the matter was placed in the hands of thb public functions committee. Dr. E. Y. Comrie made an appeal to employers to ask junior members of their staffa to join the St. John Ambulance Association, and stressed the need for recruits. Mr. Baird said lie was gratified to see- that the registration of motor-cars this year was greater in Hastings than in Napier, and he said that the whole provincial clistrict had probably more cars than any other similar provincial distriet. It wa-s very pleasing to see such an increase, which was a clear sigu of prosperity.
