GOOD TOTE RISE Trailer's Win In Rotopai Handicap BEN BRAGGIE'S SPRINT Tho Hawke's Eay Jockey Club eoncluded its winter meeting on Saturday, when the totalisator returns showed an increase of £3722, as compared with those for the samo day last year. Por the day £10,816 was handled, making a total of £17,716 for the meeting. as against £11,401 10/- for the winter meeting last year, being an indrease of £6315 10/-. R." Marsh and B. H. Morria were the most successful horsemen, each having two winning mounts. Details of 'the additional races run after we went to press on Saturday are:— ■ ROTOPAI HANDICAP. Hume's b'.m., 5rs., 8.13 (P. Burgess) 3 (Winner trained by J. 32. Olsen, Hastings.) Also started: 7 Hamarin 8.12- (H. Callahan), 8 Tractile 8.10 (S. Andereon), 5 Royal Mdnstrel 8.10 (B. H. Alorris). 6 Gironde 8.7 (S. Wilson), 3 Silent Acre 8.2 (G. Tattersal), 10 Mon Ace 8.0 (H. Murray), 9 Golden Time 8.0 (W. Broughton). The ten riunners got away in line, but as usual at this start the inside horses were the iirst to show out when Royal Minstrel and Taillight were iirst to be seen in front, but when the fields took up their running positions the order was Royal Minstrel, Taillight, Golden Time, Silent Acre and Gironde. Golden Time had raced to the front entering the baek ahead of Royal Minstrel, Silent Acre, Taillight and Gironde, with the ultimate winner, Trailer, about seventh position. By the time the halfmile bend was reached Silent Acre had run to the lead followed by Golden Time, Gironde, Royal Minstrel, Taillight, Hamarin and Trailer. The former was still ahead of affairs turning for home from Gironde, Golden Time, Royal Minstrel, Taillight, Hamarin, Terry and •Trailer. Golden Time and Royal Minstrel were tho Iirst to weaken in the iun~ home and then Silent Acre. Just when Taillight looked the winner Trailer Was seen coming fast to be very dangerous. Terry had some trouble in getting through and in a great tUssle Trailer got np in timo to beat Taillight for major honours by a head wliile Terry was placed third a similar discance away. Quake hopped away first, but Shani was in close attendance. Before the five-furlong post was reaclied the order was Colleen Gain, Quake, Helios and Top .Hat. There was £ urther alterafcions in the running in ihe next i'urlong for tho leaders to^rcad CoJleeu Gain, Perfect Lady, Quake, Hop Hat, Helios and Shani, but no material change occUrred in the run to the straiglit entrance when Colleen Gain was first to give way. when stronglv challenged by Quake and Top Hat. The latter appeared likely to come home, I)Ut Quake, vigorously ridden by Morris, finished the stronger to gain the vcrdict by one and a-half lengtlis from Top Hat. who was half a length ahead of Colleen Gain, who eaine again at the finish. Shani was placed fourth. Time, 1.17 2-5. FINAL HANDICAP. Of £120; 6 furlongs. 2 BEN BRAGG1E — Mr G. Gunn'S br.g., 4 yrs.. by Gascony — Yalley Iiose, 10.0 (B. H. Morris) 1 7 Blygain — Mr W. Wilson ;s ch.m., Oyrs., 8.2 (R. Marsh) 2 1 Peter Beckford — Mr G. D. Beatson's ch.gv 4yTS., 9.12 (P. Atkins) 3 (Winner trained by J. H. Jellerd, Ngatarawa.) Also started: 6 Passion Flower 9.2. (S. Wilson), 9 Shu (C. Oarroll), 3 Hunter's Morn 8.12 (S. Anderson), 5 Sir Nigel 8.6 (G. Tattersal), 4 Solaria S.2 ('W. Broughton), 10 Taro 8.0 (L. Malloy), 8 Bunfight 8.0 (M. Gilmore). This race was delayed by the waywardness of Hunter's Morn who was in oue of his "piggish" moods. When the field was first lined up he swung round and gailoped back to the birdcage and after some persuasion by his jockey, S, Anderson, was led back again to the start, but no sooner had Anderson mounted again when the unruly starter again gallopcd back, but th'is time was firrn in his resolution not again to go round to the starting post, eo the starter, Mr W. Price, released the barrier without him. The rest got away with an evcn start for Blygain, Ben Braggie, Peter Beckford, Bunfight. and Solaria most prominent. Round the halfmile bend first came Blygain, Ben Braggie, Peter Beckford, Solaria, while Bunfight and Taro wero abroast next, just ahead of Passion Flower. The first
four round the home bend were Blygain. Ben Braggie, Peter Beckford and Solaria. At the distance Peter Beckford threatened to be dangerous, but his effort was short-lived as he soon faded, allowing Ben Braggie to go ahead and win conifortably by a good length from Blygain, With two lengths back to Peter Beckford and Solaria a moderate fourth.
