TECHNICAL OFF COLOUR
Extremely Dull Contest With Havelock INTEREST WANES Technical showed. lione of tho form Which has kept them near the top Of the championship iadder •when • they defeated Havelock North hy 16 points to five at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday. The game was extremely dxab, livened hy flashes of individual play, and the margin is most flattering to the home side. All Technical 's points were scored in the second half after they had been down five points at the interval. Thq teams were: — • Technical : Rosslter, Herbert, Plested, Cushingi, Byford, Peterson, Riddell, W. Johnson, Campbell, Brooks, Bowman, Dallimore, McAuslin, Dalton and Skittrup. Havelock North: Bligh, ltoy Joll, F. Gloyn, ltangi Joll, R. Gloyn, C. Joll, Davis, Heffernan, Ferguspn, A. Joll, Ross, Small, Cullen, Russell and Butcher. Badly-fielded kicks, dropped passes, and general drabness were tlie main feature of the opening stages of the match, together with a host of scrum infringeinents on the part of Technical. Naturally enough the crowd was apathetic, and dozed quietly in tlie warm sun, arousing occasionally to applaud some effort on the other grouiid. Nothing was seen of either set of backs, fortunes alternating with the etforts of the forwards. At one period the Technical back secured near the line and each player took his pass flatfooted, without gaining ground Until several yards of territory were lost. Finally the Havelock forwards attacked strongly and forced Technical into their own twenty-five. Securing the ball iii the loose, C. Joll drew the full-back and sent Russell ovei under the posts. C. Joll eonverted. Dropped passes again broke up a Technical movement when within striking' distance, and Havelock soon after almost scored again when C. Joll tried a speculator that was just cleared from play before he arrived at tho line. A solid defence kept Havelock out of trouble for tho remainder of the spell and Technical left the field at the interval five points down. Five minutes of play after the interval saw W. Johnson land a penalty. Technical again attacked, but were penalised near the line, qnd tbe Village f.orwards swept downfield, and continued to hold their own. As the game progressed without change in the score, the Technical forwards made desperate efforts. A kick by Davis was tielded and returned by Rossiter, and when the defending back fumbled. Rossiter was on him to secure and send ltiddeli across. Johnson eonverted, and soon after he secured in a line-out and crossed again, Herbert missing the kick. Havelock were forced to defend hard but the continued attack by Technical again bore fruit when Byford Crossed, Johnson converting. Havelock showed their usual la'st-minute burst of speed, and penetrated the defence on several occasions, but no further score resulted. Scorers: Technical (16), W.
