Potatoes for South America

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Interest in the grain and produce tnarkets continues to centre on potatoes which are virtually the only line to ah.ow any life. The local market is iweaker,, particularly for whites, which jhave slipped. In Sonth Cauterbnry, assembling shipments for South ; America has kept mer chants so busy ; that although there is sign of a revival of interest from the North Island, they iare nofc able to- give much attention to hiu market. Shipments to South Am.erica are either despatched alreqdy ' jOr booked and amount to moro than : 13, 00.0 tous. There is another boat next month and: one itt August. Shipments hava. been made aiready as follo.ws; From Timaru and Lyttelton the., Hororata (1000 tons), Coptic (1250 tons), 'Tongariro , (74ff tons), Mahia (1300 tons) Port Caroline (750 tons) and Norfolk (1512 tons). Shipments which will gO within aboirt a. week are by the ■Westmoreland (1200 tons), Taiaroa (1700 tons), Pakeha (2300 tons) and Pott ChalmerB (1500 tons). The. Fordsdale is due to sail next month and the Matakana in August, but the sife of thc ■ potato shipments to be made. on these two boats is not yet known. The kuown total is 13,267 tons aiready shipped or booked. ■ Fowl wheat is very firm and it appears certaiil that moro imports witl , have to bc made from Australia. Milling oats arc steady though there is not a great deal of enquiry. Fced oats are, if anything, easier. Chafi; is fairly firm at up to £4 10s at near stations. * Trade in small seods is practically at a standstill.
