H.B.J.C. MEETING Beaiitiful Weather For Second Day HURDLES TO IDD0 The Hawke's Bay Jockey. Club concluded its winter meeting at Hastings to-day in bright sunshine, with a light southerly breeze blowing across ihe grounds. The course was in improved order torday, having dried considerably sipce Thursday. There was a good attendance, and much larger than on the opening day. Bplendid fields went to tlie post, and the racing was of a high standard, A programme of musical selections was relayed through loud speakers. The single pool machine only was in operation on the totalisator. Results of the racing up to the tinie of going to press fire as under : — HASTINGS HANDICAP. Shields), 8 Winitangi 8.0 (J. Forsyth), 10 W'ilful Lady 8.0 (L. J. Malloy). Sbani and Mahala were scratche.d for the opening event, allowing eleven to go to the post. Wilful Lady was ffactious at the barrier, to delay the etart for five or six minutes. Eventually the field was despatched in > fair line, for Hunting Spy to quickly ruSh to the front with a gap of two iengths back to Perfect Lady, Marsyas, Candico and Colleen Gain. Four furlongs from kome Hunting Spy was still out on her own from Perfect Lady, Candico, First Ohapter, Marsyas and Seattle. Turning for home Hunting Spy, beginning to come back to her field, was still in front with Colleen Gain, First Ohkpter, Oandieo. Marsyas and Pukehou elosing up. First Chapter, at the distance, was in front, but stopped slightly, and in a stirling finish Colleen Gain won by a head over Marsyas, with First Chapter but a neek awav third. ' ( Over the first jump John Charles landed first, with Mahala, Iddo; Unexpected and Kentueky Song in close attendance; but here Contact and his rider parted company. "When they took up their running positions Mahala had taken over the role of pac6naaker with John Charles, Bothwell, Iddo, Unexpected, Kentueky Song and Journet following and Ythan well back last. Coming into the straoght the first time MahaJa, Bothwell, John Charles. Iddo, Journet, Unexpected, Kentueky Song and Ythan was the running order. There was little change in this order passing tho stands, but going out of the straight Bothwell was rushed to the lead, Juinpiug the Soufchland road hurdle Bothwell loot three or four Iengths, allowing Mahala again to take over. At the half-mile Iddo had gone up into seeond position in behind Ma-
hala, with John Charles and Journit close np 311st ahead of Unexpected ftSw Keptucky Song. At the pgottlttpitt . fence Iddo had' robbed Mahala, Oftbf lead to turn for home well out in front and, going like a train, to continuq on with his good work and win easujy By two and a-half Iengths despite th| game effcits made by John Charles and Jonrnet. The latter outstayed John Charles for second place by a long B60k, While Mahala was a pootf fourth. The xqst wero strung out at long dntervals. Tho former still held 601a* mand turning for home, and Le Touquet was slightly ahead of Gladium and Fossicker. Passing the stands and over the double the former was ahead of a bunched field. Going ojit of the home straight, the field - singled themselves out in this order. Mitzi, Cotsfield, Eiotous, Padnos, Dozit and Wykemist. Down the back they ran as mentioned. but at the Sod.bank I\>zie fell. Turning into the straight ihe second time Mitzi still held com-' mand while Eiotous had run up iuta spcond place, followed by Cotsfield and Padnos and Wykemist together. This was how they took the double iu frout of the main staud, and out of ths straight they were still in the sanio order, but into the baek stretgh ihe last time Eiotous had run up. alongside Mitzi, with Cotsfield tiring, third, Padnos fotjrth, and Wykemist last; Over the sod wall Eiotous was half a lengfch ahead of Mitzi, with Padnos, Cotsfield and Wykemist in that order. The same order was mai.ntained coming to the last fence, when Mitzi fell, allowing Eiotous to come home easily a winner by four Iengths, with Padnos 10 iengtlii ahead of Cotsfield.
