EMPIRE GAMES AT SYDNEY TALENT IN THE RUNNING AUSTRALIAN WRITLR'S ' CQJilMENT Mr. T. McFadden, of Dunedin, writes to The Referee pn the burning question of New Zealand bpwling representation at Sydney in ihe Empire Games. Xiplike Australia, they wifi not neeu , to qualify by wlnning the A.B.C. evehts, ' which i§ npt equitable. ^tr» M'cFadden writes : — From the gtanding pf havipg been twlce champion of chafiipions pf Otago, ■ may t express thi pugh your colunms my conception of a group of bowi'ers fpr the gingles, dpubles, and rinks, aiiy one of which wpul,d be likely to xecord a good New Zealand exhibillpn at the British Empire Gam.es to be held in Sydney in February next. As the o.nly reasonable base tp work from, I compiie imy list' solely from consideration of their present form an.d that "of the past few years. In the rinks' list I place as jslcip any one of three eminent bpwlers: Carswell, of Otago, who has won 12 New Zealahd championships, pinbraciPg } singles, dpubles' and rinkg. • That Carsweju xemains at the top of his form is qonfirmed by his reqent successes. Maxwell Walker,' pf Auckland, who has had five New Zealand successes, in three •singles and orie each" in doubles and ifinks. • Hqwarth, of Canterbury, who has won rinks twice, and doubles once. As thir.d," J we.ul.d choose Liyingstone, of Auckland, who has won "a New Zealand singles, and" is presqni champion .of champions of Auc'klmid. As second, Foster, o£ Otago, who Ihas been su.ccessful in two New Zealand 'sihgles, and"one rinks, also pres1 ent chaifipion of champions pf Qtago. As lead, Rest, pf Otago, who holds ." one New Zealand singles and two rinks, mso was champipn pf champions of Qtago and ' holds seven successiye .club" champjPhships.* He Is I think, regarded among bpwlers as New Zealand's butstanding lead." In ihe doubles list I would place Bremner of Auckland, who has t\yice wpn ihe New Zealand and once tlie doubles. As skip, S.cott of Otago, who hag been twice New Zpeianb ^ppion, and also champioii of champions of Otago, ag lead. tn the singles I would place Fngebretsen, of Napier, who has won a New Zealand singles. Summary, my. choicp .fpr. the rinkg
is Carswell, M. Walker or Howarth, as skip— Livingstone third, Foster second, Best lead. In the doubles: Bremner skip and Scott lead. In the singles, Engebretsen. Just how they are going to dispose of the claims of Alex Rohertson, as possibly the best third in the Dominion, asks "Boomerang" of. the Sydney Referee. Arthur Parspns, if availgble, Howarth's legder, and others, is not quite clear. If I were chooging the New Zeqland party it \youid be spmething like this: — Singles: Any ,one of 10, aqcording tp ihe men available, but including Livingstone, Engebretsen, ' Robertson, Best, Walker (if he has "come back") Parsons, H. Clarke, J. Braokenridge. Rink; Best, Livingstone, RobertsOn, Walker. Pairs: Best if not in the rinks with Bremner. Or Best and Parspns.
