LONDON, May t. Miss Elaine de Chair, who spent several years of her girlhood in Sydney when her father, Admiral Sir Dudiey de Chair. was Governor of New South Waies, and whose engagement to Mr. B. J. A. Hamer, of Fawley, Hampshire, was announced a few days ago, Avas the heroine of a flre which seriously damagcd CidJand House, / a famous Hampshire mansion, early this morning. Awakened at 5 a.m. by the noise of soniethiug fallipg down a chimney Miss de Chair found the place on fire and re*aod the household. When it was joutiu that tlje telephone was out of order, she donned a coat over her night attire, and set out in a cav for Fawley to summon the brigade. The car, however, broke down, and Miss de Chair ran lialf a mile to the village in her bedroom slippers. Is the mekntime, her fiance and otherg in the house formed a buclcet brigade, using water from a poncl in the park! Four brigades eventually sueeeeded in cor,fining the clamage to the ivest wing of the building.
