End of tlie Round Now Reached % TAKAPAU'S WIN
(By 1
Last Saturday's senior Rugby matches in Central Hawke's Bay resulted: — Takapau (4) beat Waipukurau (nil)\ Porangahau (35) beat Tikokino (3). Old Boys (20) beat Ongaonga (3). Otane beat Te Aute Cqllege by default. Oue of the largest erowds evor seen at a club matcli in Takapau saw tlie liome team win an cxeitnig victory over Waipukurau. During- tho game both teams wore called upon for periods of desperate defence, and thc strength of the defence was sliown by the fact that on a perfect Rugby day not a single try was scorcd. Ouce more at full strength, the Takapau backs wore able to give adequato support to their excellent forwards. In tlie absence of the usual Waipukurau first hve-eighth, that position was capnbly filled by their captain, M. Lanc, who usually shincs as a loose forward. The narrow niargin between the two teams kept the spectators highly excited, but the general verdiet was that tho better team won. An outbreak oi siekness, not of a serious nature, foreed Te Aute to defnult to Otane. For the same reason tho College will be unable to play this week 's Moascar Gup fixture in I'alnierstoi^
The postponement of this game, usually run by tbe Manawatu A. and P. Society as a Winter Show attraction, might enable the local sub-union to stage a Moascar Cup match in Waipukurau. As the Palmerston Winter Rhow finishes next SatuTday, the Palmerston Boys' High Sehool — Te Aute match is now "in the air." With the first round of the Central Hawke's Bay senior grade concluded, the position of the teams is as follows:
Exceptional interest will be added to tbe second round by tlie rapid improvement of Porangahau and Old Boys. In Waipukurau last Saturday thc Porangahau mcn wero in rare form; by scoiang tleven tries against Tikokino they set a ie'cord for tliis season. As only one of their tries was converted their placelricking must stil] be surprisingly weak. Lt would pay tliem to let one man take all their goal-lcicks. At Otane next Saturday the two leading teams meet, and the clash between the two best forward packs in the district will be most interesting. The winners of this match will have niore than an even chance of winning tlie competition.
