Basketball. THE TRIAL GAME.

"Centde")

Comment on The Play And Players COMPETITION POINTS

(By

Tiagt Saturday saw the first trial jnatch between Hastings and Napier representatives in connection with the selection of the Hawke's Ba-y major team for the Dominion tournament to ha held in Auckland during August. Ebhett Park was chosen *0? ^h® first trials, and iudcine by the n,uniher of sp*ctatars, great interest is being taken hy one and all in the selection. A very noticeable fact in both ts&me was the shortness of the forwards, but fortunately they are very quiqk _ on their feet and are capabl# of retrievu ing the hall under the post even •ga'nst tall defence. The Hastings team proyed superior to Napier, gaining a lead in the first Ttnbroken 20 minutes, The passing ,was brilli&nt, the handlipg of the ball xemarkably clean, and the shooting was very accurate, especially among ihe local forwards. Napier had some real ' ' hard-luck ' ' shots, the ball rolling round the hoop and out sevet-al .times. Very few new faees appeared in the Napier team, but Hastings has *ix new players. Ihe Playere, G. Wilson (Havelock) deserved her placo in the Hastings team, having played a very good defensive game this steason, and is a player who is going to iropfove ®vq? more th.an she has done already. J. Joll, defence, also from Havelock, Is another much-improved player and $s a very conlistent one also. Jean can elways be relied npon to play a good ■teady game, no matter who the opponents may be, T. Hixon (West End) centre, plays a .very dietermined games arid is a great nsset to her team and follows up her game in both attaek and defence. V. Wall (West End), forward, is a player of much experience, although aho has not been in the representative team previously. Venice is alwhy* very fclcrt and can shoot goals from any pDsitiafi. M. McAlese (H.S.O.G.), forward, Is another player of outstanding ability and ie an aequisition to any team, no matter in which position she) play*, Hor temperamept is excellent and she ehowed her abUities in good light on Bnturday. B, Seto»( H.S.O.G.), forward, has played. a very good game for her club this year, and it is pleasing to see her among the Hastings representatives. Bhe has won her place in the team Ihrough hard work and consistent good play. Of the other six players who have had representative experience, it can well be jsaid "that they played up to their usual high standard, R. Tong and R. Butcher both being outstanding. G. Symes was carrying out medical auvice by remaining on the side-line owing to denture troubles. I. Joll and, H. Bligh, in the centre, both played brilliantly and F. Struthers always plays a very atrong game ia the defence. Nest Trial. The nest trial game takes place in Napier on June 26, and as this will be the ftnal chance of selection, players are advised to be specially fit for that fiay. ■_ # . Hlness of Selectors. It is with regret that we have to report the illnoss of Mrs Hinggton, Hastings senior selector, and we wish her a very spoody recovery. It fel) to the lot of. Mrs Craven to take Mrs Hingston's place on the Hawke's Bay selection coramittee, where, strangely enough Napier had t'o siibstitute Miss Hor*efield, in the absence of Miss Ca. hill, also through illnesa. Kiug's Birthday TQurnament. Once again the annual tournament was a great success, and the weather tuxned out better than the signs of •urly morning indicated. Good fast games were witnessed, especially in the finai matches, and the winners in the various grades are»to be congiatu* lated on theiT oonsistent play. Many# thauks are 3ue to those ladjes who aro ■o willing to give their lielp in tlie cafeteria, and hot tea and soft drinks were thoroughly cnjoyed by the players. To all those who hclpod to make thc tournament such a success, many thapks. Tiiuiaday'g Games: ~ II.S.O.G. v. Woolworth'si — This was a very keenly contested game right throughout, both teams showing bonefit derived from the ifing's Birthday tournament. H.S.O.G. are uufurtunato in stili being without A. Emmerson in tbe defence, but Audrey's ankle is no progicasing very well. H.S.O.G. registered a wm in this game by 21 goals to IS. Havelock v. Eoachs'. — This was * very exciting game. Uutil this match :iu/achs, had not beon beaten, while jclovcioek had suffered ocly one defeat. Tho match was a very even oue, and both teams played thqir beSt game to date. The handling of the ball was much more certain and the passing better than njbst other games. Havelock 2Ture the winners by 18 goals to 17. thus putting theiu iu thb load with Koachs', eight points cach. Swifts 14 v, G.O.G. lo. — Swifts hnvc been most unfortunaU! this soason having lost four out of tlio five games played by a very small niargin. (j.O.G hik V?.bertS011 playing her first match oi the seison. iShe worked weJl with the other forwards, and her height was a great elp to her team. JiicHen^e's v. T* With a f,,Jl DUlu^r t .Jrl' ao f game was vei7 patcliy. i i^.ijjtist won tho match by 15 to s/x I Ihus being unbeateu in the first rouuuj Team*' Points. The following unoificial table slxjus coihplete detaiis of tbe iirst ruumi matches on Thursdays. Erom this ,i will be seen that St. Matthew's edsi!v kead the scoring list for the first roumi, with Baptist second and McKenzie 's a yery close third. Baptist also had thej I

least goals aeored cgainst them, and thev are to bo congratulatcd on their undofoated record.

As many emergencies as ou like moy play, but only one player i olbngs to another team.
