REVIEW OF THE RUNNERS
Steep'echasing has a fascination all it« own, and many of the public prefer |be winter programrnes tp that of mpre important flat eyent?. With fine fields engaged tormorrpw, the opening day pf tbe Hawke's Bay winter meeting, there is sure to be a large attendanoe> Torday 's rain will rpake tha going perfeet for to-morrow, as the track was badiy in need of at least a twelve-hour soakjng for the jumping events. The aingle-pooi befting system will be in operation, and tran?port arrapgements, as advertised, will be found suitable for bpth town and copntvy visitors. Napier patrons are advised tbat the New Zealand Railway buses will earry pas&engers right to the racecour&s entrances, and will await theye after the tast race for tbe retiirn trip.
Following is a review of the eeyen rjices to-morro\v: — 11.30: MAIDEN RACEJ. Star Lad ran a fme race for fifth at liia oue attempt at (greenmeadows last weejt, and tlie raco 'is certain to liave (lenpiitqd him, At the game meeting J.acynth was badly left to run a good raco and iinisli oiose up bebind tbe placed horses. Thala, wno will be Dracketed witb the previous-naentioned iilly, also knows how to move. Mona ivisg, is onthe improve. ^initangi galloped weli yesterday morning lo qasily defeat Cletrac, wbo 0.3 al?J0 engaged in this race. Joo Louis is one of the prime fancies. Banerua and Oha are baekward. Clavercourt led for abaut half a mile last Saturday, and then ICtirod, Marehing On, Ikmdy Bav and Pefepd may do better latep Sea'ttle ran a very fair second last Saturday. In this race Mon Ace was badly away to rqb him of any chanco of succeas. Girl Pat, ffom Trentham, is a two-yoar-old, and her best perforxnance to date is a second to Jack Tar cn the Waikato district earliei* in the seasQn. Seacourt galloped attractively yesterday mprning. Tommy Atkins is a loiig tin\e getting out of the novico olas?. Shaui is a, possibiliity. The public 's choice may be JOE LOUIS, JACYNTHT.BLALA bracket and SEATTLE. 1?.15: WHAKATU HURDLES. Blue Tiger has a eouple of hurdle races to his credit. High Grader has already established himself as a hurdler, and now that it has rained his chances are enkanced. Contact;s recent fornx is nothing to enthuse over. Unexpected appreeiatcs a heavy track. Iventracky Song may go better over the Hastings hurdles. Begorrah has heen paid up for in preference to Sybil Song and John Qharlps from H. S. Greene's stable. Mahala and Pikete make up the field. The favourites may be HIGHGltADER, BEQORRAH and CONTAGT, 1.10: GORINTHIAN PLATE. Pladie was beaten by Tres Sec and Pucciui yesterday morning by six or spven lengths, which points to the Paladin gelding being much below form. Dusky Crown was third at Napier, when Mercdan Prince was last in the samq rape. Taillight dead-heated iu the Carbine Plate at Ellerslie last week with Sniall Boy. Bothwell, although a light-fleshed horse, may be more solid tfian formerly. Umpire was a little unlucky to go down to Tres Sec at Napier. Iddo would have had a host of admirens had he been started in the hurdles. True Shaft was once a horsc ap to open company. Ythan has a little form on his slde. The best backed may be TAILLIGHT, UMPIRE and BOTHWELL. • 1.45: HAWKE'S BAY STEEPLECHASE. Mitzi is only a pony, but she can juinp with the best. Her only win %u date was last February, at Wairoa, vyhen she won the district raec, and her only experience of stecple.chasing, the hunting field. A win for Miss Ramsay M'cKay Js nominafcion would be popular as she trains and also rides her own inare at the hunts. as well, of course, owning this Noster — Tragedienne production. Wykemist ran two good races last week. Cotsfield, a splendid fencer, must have a chance ou his jumping alone. Eiotous was in minor placcs both days at Wanganui, and the racing will haye beneiited this brilliaut fencer. Monarchy is not fancied on account of liis bleeding hubits. Dozio wpu at Napier, but it was only. t.Ue tactics adopted by her pUot that pulleU her through. Being a Lucuilus, she will be be.tter now that it has rained. Manawatu, on his running last August at the National meeting, should ensure him being one of the favourites. Padnos has one or two minor places to his credit already tliis jumping season. Wkat will be better backed than MANAWATU, WYKEMIST and RIOToub? 2.30: WINTER "HACK HANDICAP. Agog prefers dry eonditions. Royal Ueast looked a probable winner both days at Napier, but when istraightened up for home weakencd over the business end. Trailer is a verv fit horse. Runiing Tartan was fourth in his one raco at Napier, and to-morrow 'a going may suit him better. Lucuilus Lad has a tidy weight to earry, bnt is so honest and consistent that lie will havo many l'riends. Ilamarin is anothor that ineets tlie eyc as being as fit as posfijble. Gii'onde is not fancied after liis exhibstious last week. G eildon Time is nol aptly namod. Tupai dp galloping nn-'
racing poorly. Terry is useful over middle distances. Siient Acre has little to recommend him. Three that may appeal nvost are HAMARIN, TRAILER and TERRY. 3.10: CLIFTON HACK HANDICAP. Blue Shirt galloped well yesterday morning in company with Royal Minstrel, whp is back to something iike hi.? right form qnd condition. Buster Brown is puly of average class. Joviality won a double at Napier Park, and now that it has rained his chances read better. Le Touquet will be an outsider. Marsyas and Clavercourt are not fancied, but Traekman may surprise. Fossicker is only a moderate, but being a Hunting Song a heavy track will be tp his liking. Liane has npt fqlfijled the promise made in the spring, when she won at Wellington, defeating Peter Beckfpru and others^ Paul Robeson i's a fair sprt. Eelios has but one race to his credit over a two-year tqrf career. Gladium fs not fancied, but Perfeet Lady might surprise. The favourites may be JOVIALITY, LIANE and ROYAL MINSTREL. 4.0; HERETAUNGA HANDIOAP. Taro is a much improved horse on his racing and trip to Wanganui recently. Blygain is eonsiistently in minor places, Gay Hunter just won over seven furlongs at Napier, but will be better suited to-morrow now that the tracks have beeome easier. Hunter 's Morn did not race at Napier Park, but there is nothing amiss with this er-ratic gelding. Passion Flower and Passion Fruit, the bracket, both* go well in soft going, especially the latter. This race has been robbed of a great deal pf interest by the non-acceptanee of Ben Braggie, Peter Beckford and Pekanui. Recovery may be looked to from TARO, HUNTER 'S MORN and the PASSION FLOWER-PASSION FRUIT bracket.
