Observations Should Be Taken in Antarctic POLAR COMMITTEE

(Received 15, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 14. * The Polar Committee reports having considered how co-operation can best bo pursued in conneetion with scientific and economic activiti#s in the Antarctic, particularly in the establishment of meteorological stations and activities that the Royal Researeh ship riscovery II. might undertake during any voyage south of the territories administered by the Australian and New Zealand Goverhments. It was recommended that the attention of the Australian, New Zealand and South African Governments be drawn to the United Kingdom Meteorologieal Of&ce director's suggestion, in tlie interest of accurately forecasting weather tliroughout tlie world, that oue or two permanont meteorological stations be established in the Antarctic for aceurate recording of daily climatic conditions. It was hoped that the ship Diseovery II. would shortly cai'ry out a 20tuonths cruise and that the United Kingdom, in conjunction with other interested Governments would eonsider a programme and policy of future Autarctic investigations. It was recommended in the •:neuntirne that the Dominions be lcept in closest touch with tlie Diseovery Committee 's worlt and be invited to appoint representatives from their permanent London staff-s to attend committee meetings; also that the United Kingdom Government selcct few scientifie or other workers to accompany the (Diseovery II. on ita ntext cruise.
