HIGH WIND FANS GRASS FIRES
TWo grass fires in Napier last evening fanned by a liigh wind, occupied the attention of the Napier Central and Rort Ahuriri Fire Brigades. Although in eacli case the fires were burning furiously when the brigades arrived, they wei-e extinguished without any diffieuity. Owing to the fact that the Napier^ brigade had already . received a call to the pier on the Westshore side of the channel into the Iron Pot, both engines and all the ffiembers of the Napier brigade were occupied at the same time. The first call was made to the Port Ahuriri brigade at 6.3 p.m.; it wa- a grass fire at the South Pond, below the Nurses' Home at the NSjpier Public Hospital. The fire eovered a wide ure&j but was speedily extinguished. The second call was to the Napier Fire Brigade at 9.'30 p.m. to deal with a further grass fire in Hyderabad tyad, near Main street. In this case, also, th© fire was fanned by a high wind and nad gained a hold over a wide area- of grass, but no dapiage Was done to anj buildings, and the blaze was qutokly extinguished.
