POVERTY BAY WINS
GISBORNE, Last Night. In a game marked by dropped passes and lost opportunities, Poverty Bay scored a lucky win over Wairarapa by 34 — 11. Although Wairarapa were slow in settling down, once they did so they shadowed the Bay in all departments except loose forward play. The visiting backs were more dangerous in attacking* but possibilities were mitigated -by faulty positional play. Bay early had Wairarapa troubled, being' eight points up in the first 25 minutes. From then on Wairarapa held a elightly upper hand and both back Iinep made. efforts lo open up the game. Sharp stood out in the Bay . chain,"' while at full-back Brown was . solid. Hume, the visitors' second five-eighth, was the star back on the ground, giving a splendid exhibition. Brunton, in tho eentre position, also figured prominently. Heading the Bay forwards, Ware worked like a Trojan but the pack 'to a man were solid toilers and F. McA'neney, Steel and Rogers were always prominent. Of the visiting pack, Varcoe, Percy Crookenstein and McGregor stood out. Wairarapa 's luck was out when two minutes before the end Hatton missed a field goal, the ball hitting an upright and rebounding. Tries for Bay were scored by A. McAneney, Grant and Moeau and Brown converted 'one and kicked a > penalty. Eastwood; who displayed ; great speed, scored both Wairarapa's tries, Brunton converting . one and kicking a penalty.
