CAPITAL LEVY

Our Own Correspondentl.

Loan Suggested By Wairoa Hospital Board Member

CFrom

At the Hospitals JBoard meeting a great deal of the time was spent in discussing a motion by Mr. H. L'. Harker, that as much as possible of the capital levy for the cnrrent year should be raised by way of ioan. In view of the changed attitude of the County Oouncil, making it now too late to carry out prdperty saies in time, the word- ''levy" was substituted for "loan." Mr. Harker contended that the Hospital Board should not be an invest-ir-.ent - body, • and should not be a landowner unless for a specifie purpose. In the Golf Club they had a good proposition as a possible. buyer, and if the club went , elsewhere they. would have oh their hands a bad proposition from a farming point of' view. Mr. Chapman, while agreeing wlth the principle of • a local body not owning land, said it had been bought in good faith for hospital purposes, and was now no use to the board, but the Golf Club. had a lease for iive years, and they could not get a buyer for building, or for farming, both being too costly at the present time, but ii the club could buy he. would be with Mr. Harker , to sell. Mr. Williams aiso favoured getting the capital . levy by loan, realising .. ou the properties and so reducing'the burden- on the ratepaycrs- by way of xates. The. .chairman said they mi'ght be able.,to get that. in ne^t year, .wben ,an additioxial, capital levy would be neeU-. ed. ? . .. After .-.other mcmbers ha3 ■ again spoiten.' the .chairman i suggested that Ihe method of ralsing',. the capital by loan be* dropped fqr this'year and let the .xliib 'mpke -an offer for the- prop-: erty. . - .'Mr. - Williams - suggested .that the board should tell the club that .they. would "be glad to hear from them in regard to an 'offer> '• Mr. (jhapman • endorsed the previous speaker's remark's, and a motion'to this efifect' was ; carried.
