EXCESSIVE DRINKING

Not Occurring on RaiSway Works (By Telearanh Pr.c. Ans.-.-intion.' BLENHEIM, Last Night. EecenEy Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., as chairman of the Wairau Licengmg Oommittee, referred to reports of exeessive drinking at Kaikoura by men engaged on' the construction of the South Main Trunk and instructed the poliee to submit a report. To-day the committee received a report from (Jonstable McLennan, at Kaikoura, to the effect that no excessive drinking was occurring. "I ani very pleased to reeeive the report; it is most satisfactory, and all doubts I had on the matter have been removed. I unreservedly accept the evidence of the constable," said Mr Maunsell. The constable's statement waa to the effect that there was no excessive drinking among the men employed on the railway construction works at Kaikoura as far as he knew, "I visit the hotels and patrol the township with Constable Abbott several nights eaeh week, up to a late hour, but so far we have had to speak to only oue or tWo of them, and they are not in a bad state. There have been no complaints from the camps as to the men drinking, and none of the men have been arrested for drunkenness. There are nearly 1000 men now employed ia this sub-district, and so far they are a line lot and give no trouble. There have been no eomplaints from residents of the dislriet about the conduet of the men."
