HASTINGS BOROUGH Work of Major Nature Not Contemplated ESTIMATES C0NSIDERED With the ma.iority of the local bodies in the district announcing increased rates for the now current vear, the annoucemcnt last evening by the Mayor of Hastings, Mr G. A. Maddison, that it was not the intention of the Hastings Borough Cc uncil to increase its actuai rate will be welcomed by the ratepayers of the borough. When referring at the meeting of tho council to the proposal that the ("iuneil should carry out some big srheme of work with a view to providing an avenue for men on sustenance. to obtain work, Mr hladdison saiij that such was only possible by iacreasing the rate. "The council is to-night considering its estimates ior the year," he said, "and it is not proposed that there will be any increase in tlie aCtual borough rate. There will hc, however, an increase in Ihe comprehensive amount collected bccauso of tho claims of tho other local bodies on the borough."
