RAID ON MOTORISTS

Licences end Warrants of Fitness PR0SECUTI0NS LIKELY A " raid ' ' on motorists driving without licences and jyarxants of fitness was earried out this morning at several points in Hastings. Cars w©re atopped and official "stickers" issued by the Government affixed to the windscreens of those cars which passed the requirements. The sequel will probably be heaTd in the Hastings Magistrate's Court next' week, for it has already been intimated • by the traffic authorities that the "warning" period and the tjme for leniency is .past and motorists whose cars hav.e not warrants of fitness are to be proceeded against. Already there haye beep several proseeutious in the Hastings Cour.t against mQtorists who havq failed to pbtain wan^Oits of ifitness aud, wij;h the hearing of the last case, the Magistrate, Mr J. Muller, agreed that the positvon had gone b«yond the warning stage. Mr D. Mann, the borough traffic inspeetor, said a few days ago that he considered plenty of warning . had been given and there had been suffieient time for every motorist to have secured a warrant of fitness for his vehicle. There has been some difficulty in the past in proeuring certain eguipment necessary before the issue of a warrant of fitness can be made, windscreen wipers tjeing particularly hard to obtain, but full supplies of these are now available.
