W.ith the preliminary choice of Hawke's Bay repxesentatfves takHig place at Saturday next at Ebbett Park, basketball - hais now reached the heights of enthusiasm, Thc members of the Hastings team should show up well against the Napier xepresentatives, . but only the two selectors will have , any idea as to who the final twelve gtrls will be, My advice to all those chosen in the/Hasthxgs. representatives is to play the best game you have ever " played* withciut' injuring tlie chances bf your team by individual r^ay. The position of the various teams has become very interesting, and- nest w^eek we will xiuo.te the details of .the points gained. • ;. H.S.O.G. A. Saturday have not had a loss ahd only their own B j team vto play. This tiam will be on. top jfor the first round, but there is no guarantee of what will eventuate in the ' second. . ... To-day, after' these notes have gone to presgj the two most important games of both Thursday grades will be played. In the A Grade Eoach's^ (unbeatcn) are to meet Haveloek (one loss), and Baptisf and MeKenzie 's Will play and decide> the winners; qi the first round in the. B Grade, neither team* having had a_loss. ; Thursday Games. Last Thursday was "another succeseful is^fternoon for basketball, for" tlier© were soxne good matches"played. : Wooiworth's v. Eoach's: This wa* » very even game, and Wo olworth's fSeld Eoach's. xight from start to 'ffnisMand were rather -unfdrtunate that theirj forwards found it difiicult to find tliofrmg with' the ball, as they'ltad a good'ujiare of "the b.all during the game. Eoach's team was greatly changed to thatjof last we.ek; 17 — 12 in* Eoach's fSvour was. -the final score. - - • -- C.O.G. v. H.S.O.G.: This was a very intercstijig game and both teams .wero very 'evenly matched.- > G. Gilesris^reKponsible' fpr' h'oldinfr .hhr team together and can always be relied on to play a good game. . C.Q.G. forwards are three young girls who play well together and each .play their part in throwing goals. Ilr- S in favour of H.S.O.G. Havelock v. Swifts; 'A good fasfc game in spite of the, whistle being blown very frequently. due to many small infringements caused by rough play. Swifts forwards should try and include their third player. 20 — 15 to Havelock." ; - - McKenzie 's v. _St. Mathew's: This was another even game and I believe it is St. Mathew's first defeat of the season. MeKenzie's played a njuchimproved game and showed a better understanding pf .eacjx , other 's play. 22 — 20 in f avour, of" McKenzie 's. ., * Saturday's Games.' E.S.O.G. 17, v. ClOiG. 17.— This was a very even game ri'ght through, although neither1 of the teams "sh'pwed any brilliancy. ' E. Crawford, wholin-i jiired - her side during' the vweek,'*' was not • allowed back on the field after half-time, and H.S.O.G. played one sliort in the centre, Q. McLean and B. Gray doing more than their share towards keeping the score even. P. MeLeod still continues to show promise in the forwards. H. Begley is not playing ^as well as she is capable despite the bete ' ter opposition offered "by Saturday play. D. Hort'on should defend her opponent more, and nse two arma whaa doing so. Havelock 9, v. West End 11. — This was a very interesting and exciting game from start to finish, both teams showing signs of over-eagerness, especially in the first half, when the handling of the 'ball was not as good as in the second half. West; End had tke lead at half-time, 6 — 5y and were able to maintain this lead to the end. PreHy work among West. End forwards was repeatedly spoiled by Haveloek 's defence, E. Butcher, who always plays a splendid game. Lack of aecurate shooting was attributable to the high wind which was blowing during this game/ and this feature took the cream off an otherwise excellent game. West End's defence lent themselves to advantage against Havelock 's short forwards. Neverthelegs, the latter were responsible for somo very clever passing. J. Irwine, who we have not seen playing for some time, acquitted kerself very well in the centre for West End. West Gnd were the better team 011 the day and appeared to play with a very determined effort to come out on top.
