SMALLER OYSTERS THIS YEAR
A greater preponderance of small oysters than has ever before been known in the history of the trade is causing some eoncern in the minds of oyater-eaters in Hastings and is adversely affecting the salo of 'oysters. Bluff oysters which liavc come to hautl this season show a marked falliiigfaway in size. Those in the trade say that though they are fully aware of the disparity in sizo which has characterised the imports during the last week or two, they can do nothing about it, as oysters are bought by the sack. In the past, the size of oysters seldom varied a great deal, and one could rely on a® fair average sizo throughout th'e sack. This year there are more oysters to the sack, admdttedly, but they are not so readily marketable. Just what is the cause cannot be stated definitely, but the present position might have been brought about by a preponderance of young oysters due to an unusually heavy spawning two or three yeavs ago or to the heavy removai oi the older oues.
