FAVOURITES WIN AT NAPIER PARK Hack Hurdles to Kentucky Song PAUL R0BES0N & TRAILER The Napier Park Raeing Club opened its winter meeting at Greenmeadows today an fine but wintry weather. The Weather improved later in the day, be* coming silnny and making conditions quite pleasant. The course was in good order, being faster than anticipated. There was a very satisfactory attendance. Before the running of the first race the band played the National Afitheffi. Good fields competed, • providing in-1 teresting raeing. The ariangements for the meeting were splendid, patrons being well catered for. The handiCapping was done by Mr H. Coyle. The decisions of the judge, Mr. A. V. O'Briea, gave every satisf action. The musieal prO1 gramme given by the First Hawke's Bay Regimental Band was much appfSciated. The single-pool machine waa operated on the totalisator. Results:— MOTEO HACK HURDLES. (Rohldff) % 3 Also xan: 4 Marching Song lO.i, 6 Sybil Song 9.8, 8 Pikete 9.0, 2 Cotsfield 9.0, 9 Lady Wessex 9.0, 7 Mahala 9.0. Sybil Song and Kentueky Sbng started best, leading over the first jump. Both Marching Song and Lady Wessex feil passing the stand. The favourdte took the lead from Sybil Song, Bothwell and Pikete. Running into the back Cotsfield ran up into fourth position. Running down the back to the top turn, ihe favourite opened a gap of four lengths, but going acrOss the top Bothwell Closed up a little from Unexpected, Sybil Song, Cotsfield and Pikete. Nearing the home bend. Bothwell ran up momentariiy, joining Kentueky Song. The latter dmmediateiy went away to enter the straight well clear of Bothwell and Unexpected. The favourite, jumping well over the last fenee, went on, winning easily by five lengths from Bothwell, With Unexpected third two lengths away. Mahala was well back for fourth. Time, 2.46 1-5. From a good despatch Paul Robeson Was" first to show out, wdth Defend, Triplex and Shani following through from Tullamore and Cletrac. Running to the home turn, the favourite raced well clear of the opposition, but on the turn Defend ran up, joining him. The pair turned into the straight togetbor from Triplex. with Shani qu'ickly improving her position and Tullamore also well placed. Going on to the post, Pau] Robeson drew away from Defend, who dropped back. Along the final distance Shani gathered in Triplex to finish second two lengths behind Paul Robeson, giving Gisborne stables first and second. Triplex failed to hold off Shani in a hy.rd finish by half a length, Tullamore being a close fourth half a ueck offi. Time, 1.3. BIRTHDAY HANDICAP. Of £140; 1 mile. 1 TRAILER — Mr G. Breaking away from a splendid start, Trailer -was the flrst to show the way to Lucullus Lad, Hunting Tartan and Royal Feast. Raeing down the back, Gironde showed promiso of going up, but across the top remained behind the leadere. Trailer at this stage had a baro margin only from Lucullus Lad, with Hunting Tartan and Royal Feast close up. Buster Brown was doing tho best of the otliers. Into tho straight Trailer and Lucullus Lad were on evon terms from Hunting Tartan, Royal Feast and Buster Brown. A neck-and-neck contost was staged between tho leading pair to the post, the favourite holding out by a neck in an exciting finish. Gironde, coming through froln well back, got into third a length and a-half back, just beating Hunting Tartan. Time, 1.40. NAPIER STEEPLECHASE, Of £150; about 2J miles. 3 WYKEMIST— Mr. D. Preston 's blk. g., aged, by Royal Stag — Fairy Finn, 9.6 (Carroll) 1 2 Given — Mr. S. G. Bridge's b.g., aged, 9.11 (Rakloff) 2 1 Dozie — Mr. C. E. Wykemist started well and led to the first jump and over the double from Monarchy, Given and Royal Bengal. Running down tho back Monarchy, ridden by his owner and carrying two stone overweiglit, took tlie lead, opening a gap from Given, Wykemist, Royal Bengal, Count Willonyx and Dozio..
