WAIPUKURAU, Last Night. The possibility of tapping a new source of water supply at Porangahau is to be explored by the Patangata County Council, before whose notice has been broughj the fact that for health reasons an improved supply to the Maoris is considered advisable by the Department of Health. The Medical Officer of Health pointed out in a letter that an impr-ovement in the health of the Maoris would be of indirect benefit to the white people in that locality. "As you are aware there is a considerable number of Maoris living ut Porangahau and from time to time cases .of dysentery and typhoid fever occur among them," wrote the Medicai Officer, Wellington. "One of the most effective ways ot redueihg the incidence of such diseases is by the provision of a satisfactory supply of safe water. "I therefore desire to bring to tho notice of your council the great desir ability of providing a good water supply to the Maoris in this locality. Possibly the existing supply might be extended, or if this is impossibie, an alternative supply might be found. "An improvement in the health of the Maoris would indirectly be to -the advantage of the pakehas among whom they live." The chairman, Cr. C. Pattison, said that the possibility of tapping a new source of supply would be investigated as soon as possible, but there was no urgency during the winter months. '
