MRS MARGARET R. BEAMISH
Mrs Margaret Ratigan Beamish, whose death occurred recently at her residence in Nelson street, Hastings, had been conneeted with the welfare of Hastings for many years. During her younger days she took a keen interest in work for the good of the town and rendered valued service during the war years, when she was always to the fore in running "shops" and other movements for the benefit of the soldiers. Mrs Beamish was a leader of the ehoir and Sunday school of St. John's Church, Christchurch, before she came to Hawke's Bay, and later did a great deal of church work here. She took a prominent part in ihe Women 's National Reserve, the Red Cross, the Returned Soldiers' Association, and the Mothers' Union. Born in the Canterbury district 60 years ago, Mrs Beamish was a daughter of the iate Captain Henry Cdok Lanauze, of the 56th Pompadours, Queen's Own Regiment. She married tho late Mr H. E. Beainisli. She was keenly interested in sport, and at oue time was a champion croquet player, having competed with success at tournaments throughout the Dominion. She was president of the Hastings Ladies' Golf Club and the Lawn Tennia and Croquet Club. During the influenza epidemic she rendered a wonderful service; Recent years fotxnd Mrs Beamish nlore or less in retirement but she still retained her interest in affairs in general. To mourn her death she leaves a daughter, Joyce, and a son, John, both of Hastings. The funeral took place on Saturday evening, th'fe pall-bearers being Messrs John Beamish, Jack Tipping, Noel Beamish, W. Selwyn Averill, Edgar Apsey and Dr. R. Cashmore.
