NORTHERN FORM

(Special From 1 ' Early Bird " ) .

First Day's Running at Ellerslie COLLISION'S BR1LLIANCY

f AUCKLAND, Monday. One of the smoothest performances on Saturday was that of Sky Pilot in the Greenlane Steeplechase. So well did - he finish that it is a pity that he is not in the big steeplechase. However, he will get his chance next Saturday. Emancipation rau one of his best races, but he neyer at any stage looked like beating the southerner. He should improve, and so too will Kinkle, who is likeiy for hunt cup affairs later on. Of London it may be said that he was running on. Golllsion's Briliiant Showiug. Judged on the opening day, Oollision should have been in the big hurdle event. His form was very impressive, for his rider treated the field with apparent disdain at every part. of the trip, even when he was many lengths back last. There is no dottbt that this hack is good and he can be ranked as a Winter and National Hurdles prospect. His remain.ing engagements at the meeting are in hack hurdle races.

Gay Broney gave a very nne display indeed in the Penrose Hurdles, for it is something for any* horse to attempt the Ellerslie hurdles in heavy going as a first introduetion to a jtimping eareer. That Gay Broney accomplished his task so well speaks volumes for his future prospects. Another promising jumper seen out was All Irish, who should win again very soon. It is going to be hard to pick one to beat him in the Hunt Cup.

Cornwall Runners. One of the unlucky funners in the Cornwall Handicap was Enge, who ap" peared to be hampered for room coming ifito the Straiglit and got the worst of a squee2ing-out process. He was always prominent and looks like coming back to his best form. Royal Appellant too.k the eye, but was never able to get within range of the leaders. Still, he may been a dangerous eontender on the second and third days, When the distance will be a bit shorte'r^ Beaten By Marbles. The luck of the draw was against the two favourites in the Jervois Handicap, Far Land and Pirate King, who drew 17 and 20 respectively. Seeing tliey were in the van before a furlong and a half had been covered it will be realised that they must have expended a good deal of energy in the initial stages. Erndale, who started from number 21, was not hurried so much early and he did not get to the front until a furlong from the winning" post md then retained his advantage. Better placed at the barrier, both Fat Land and Pirate King should do better on the later days. A surprisingly good showing was put up by Captaln Brucej who, although bracketed with another lightweight, would, as winner, have paid over half a hundred. Will Improve. Surella failed to repeat his Hawera form. However, he did not get the "best of the jump-out and was three horses out most. of tlie way and badly placed at that and was not riclden out whon it was seen that his case was liopoless. He should not be dismissed yet, for ho is a ve>vy much improvocj eolt.
