BRIGHT PR0SPECTS Even Fields Engaged in AI1 Races PROSPECTS REVIEWED

With even fields in all tbe seven races tbe first day of the Napier Park winter meeting bas every appearance Of providing excellent sport. Tbe course is in excellent order, tbough firm nowbere near bard. Tbe betting will be on tbe single-pool system. Transport arrangements wifil be found to suit botb town and country visitors. Racing commences with the 11.30: MOTEO HAGK HURDLES. Marching Song as a sfcieker so that, despite the iot ae has yet to learn in iiurUiiug, he will have to be considered. fcjybil teong has a braee of hurdle events to her credit, but both in poor coinpany, besides he prefers a soft track. i-.ri Vidette has speed and is also a briliiant fencer, so even at his first public attempt over hurdies he should go out well backed. Kentucky Song is showing very f air shape and also enters ealeulations. Pikete has no public forxu to go on but has been schooling brilliantly and is a likeiy outsider. Lady Wessex cannot be recommended. Cotsfield >is a fast fencer, and must not be lost sight of even though a 'chaser. Bothwell is untfied, but being by Lord Quex is another to have an outside ehance. Unexpected enjoyed a private reputation to whieh he failed to race up to at Hastings,' but may do better if the traek is at all heavy. Mahala will be inaking her first appearance as Sf jumper and . Will hfive to be taken on trust. The betting market may favour EN VIDETTE, SYBIL SONG and PIKETE.

12.10: MAIDEN RACE. Anubis, favourite for a like event at Hastings, then failed to gain a place and has had hardly a gailop since, thus leaving us in the dark as to any possible improvement made. Seattle is galloping fairly well. Taupurau has yet to race. Paul Robesbn on his eecond at Egmont looks like the probable favourite. Cletrac wefit well in a trial the other morning. Royal Romance, from Levin, has not been nominated for the maiden races at Hastings, so it looks as if his party, in entering him for the hack races, must expect him to be out of the novice class by next week. Wiuitangi as a possibility, as also are Marching On and Triplex. ^ On her eecond to Buster Brown at Hastings Shani will have her followers. The prime faneies may be PAXJL ROBESON, ROYAL ROMANOE and SHANI.

12.45: BIRTHDAY HACK HANDICAP Lucullus Lad is a proved hack miler and has also won in open company, but 9.9 will test him fully. Traetile havdng already won a couple of times over a mile, has the correct credentiala. On reeent gallops Buster Brown cannot be recommended' with any coniidtince. Royal Feast races well freeh and has been galloping attractively. Gironde may be reserved for the concluding event, being better over six than eight furlongs. Trailer seems fortunate in gettdng in with 8.8, as he has won three races — two of middle distance — still gets only 8lb. above the minimum and is placed below Gironde with only oue maiden event to his credit. Seyfried's track work is not suggestive of winning. Agog has three thirds to his credit in mile events, but Hunting Tartan has yet to show up in a race. In a fairly even field most money may be forthcomiiig fof TRAILER, LUCULLUS LAD and ROYAL FEAST.

1.20: NAPIER STEEPLECHASE. Hack conditions. Dozie has won in open company, so will have many admirers. Given, a proficieut jumper, has been twice in the money this season and, with racing condition on his side, is one to consider. Wykejnist has won iu the other island. Royal Bengal has been pleasing in his schooling and may have a say in the deoieion. Monarchy has been doing his work at Tomoana and is in flne fettle, so may prove cheeky. Count Willonyx did not impress at Woodville, where the fences were small. Padnos has had a few races over country this season, so should be in condition. Perhaps the best backed will be GIVEN, ROYAL BENGAL and DOZIE.

2.0: LADIEB' HANDICAP. For amateur rlders. King's Laneer has been scratched. Mercian Prince may be hardly forward enough to go the distance, but as a champion mudlark should have many more friends if the track is heavy. Salou has not raced for about eighteen months, but under like circumstances and farin trained he Won a similar event at the H.B. Huut meeting in 1935. Tres See, the pielc of thb handicap, has tbo riglit condition. Umpire has a reconfc placing to his | credit, but only optimists will be on Dusky Crown. Most money may go on SALON, TRES SEC and Umpire.

2.25: FLYING HANDICAP. Pakajiui, though long oil the winniug list, is going so dmpressively aud looks , so bright. that he will hardly be allowed to pay the limit. Hunter 's Morn is briliiant but bad at the barriei', so a risky venture. Passion Flov.'er is galloping well enough to be recommended, and so is Lavina, at 91bs. abOVe the minimum aguin Well treated by the handicapper. Gay Hunter is a gOod hack not likeiy to be long in that class. Snowball, not bad at her best, •. is without recent winning form. Gasman does it on the traek, but is well overdue for a win. Bunfight cannot be

recommended on fecent efforts. Blygaiu was a fair second to Peter Beckford at Hastings and has been galloping pl6asingly so has qualifications. Favouritism may be dieputed by PAKANUI, GAY HUNTER and LAVINA. 3.15: MEEANEE HACK HANDICAP. Fossicker won at his last attempt, though not out of his turn, but having struck. form may go close to repeating the do&e. Gironae is galloping wea enough to warrant support though appearing *to be over-estimated by the handicapper. Marjory Daw won at Otaki but llas since failed. In her last start Hmepit was unlucky not to wm when she ran second at Waipukurau. Joviality, who will be having liis first raco emce dding a Mght season at the stud last spring, coiild always gailop fast but was only once caught iu the rnood. Trackman, a gross sort, will need a couple of races before betng baek to fighting weight. Tupai, a pretty gclioper, will have to be reekoned with, Perfect Lady has but oue race to her credit. Golden Time go-es fast and stops quiekly, but may one of these days 1 ' hang ' ' out Six furlongs. Paul Robeson may be brought out again. The public may favour GIRONDE, FOSSICKER and HINEPIT.
