ESTIMATES APPROVED
Expeisditure Totals £64,900 The Hawke 's Bay County Council yesterday approved its estimates for thc year. Tho expenditure totals £64,900, an excess over receipts of £17,400. The chairman, Mr. F. B.'t Logan, stated that there was nothing to prevent the tar-sealing programme already approved, as the amount required for the work, £5000, liad been borrowed. Only £1000 more remained to be paid on the Tutaekuri diversion scheme, and £400 more had to be paid on the building. Attention would be given to 'the decking of the Fernhill Bridge, as it was not the intention of the council to let it remain in its present condition. The ratepayers, he said, could rely npon the council not going in for anything extravagant this year. In regard to the hospital rates, this account had shown a credit balance of £1228 on March 31 last. The levy for the current year was reported to be £18,584. A rate of ll-16d in the £ would produce £18,933. It had to be remembered that the words "would produce" werg used in tho sense of "if .100 per cent. rates were collectod." With Crown tenants and natives thh result was not likely to be achieved. Jn connection with the harbour ra,|p, approximately £5000 was to be collectod, which would necessitato a Tate of 3-lGd ^n the £. To produce the suru of money necessary to meet the demands of hospital and harbour levies a total rate of 7-8d in the £ would have to be struck. . Tentative rates only in the respective ridings for county work were fixed. Li view of works possibly being arranged to provide labour for unemployed amendments may be necessary. The rate will be definitely determined s-.t the July meting.
