SATURDAY'S HOCKEY
Te Awa Seniors Defeat Clive SOME GOOD GAMES Bitterly cold weather, punctuated by one or two Sleet showers, affected the attendance at the hockey on Nelson Park, Napier, on Saturday, but it did not quench the ardour of the players nor lower. the standard of play. Taken all round, play was very good indeed in all grades and sections, and several teams sliowed improvement on reeent .play. In the senfor women 's section To Awa notched a win over Clive by thre.e goals. to onev but two to one would have been a truer test of the merits of the two sides, for To Awa's third goal was really seored for them by the Clive goalie, who, ai'ter stopiung Ihe ball, essayed to Clear with a side hit, but instead divcrtcd the ball into the not. The goal stood to ihe crcdit of Miss M. Simmonds, who had hit the ball into the goabmouth, where dt had bcen teinporarily stopped. Miss Simnionds also seored both of Te Awa's other goals, and was playing a very Hue game. The other Te Awa forWatds all " combincd well, and gave a good e^hibition Of forward play.
Clive, tliotlgh beaten, played a better gaiae than usual, atid i'eli very little short of Te Awa in both attack and defence, but their stiek WOrlc was poor, and they lost possession of the ball on many oeeasions through this eaaSe. in the othor senior women 's game, Napier v. Teehnieal Old Qirls, no score was obtained by either side, but it was a fast game, and botli teams improved on their reeent showingsj but in eaeh ijistance rock-like dcfenee barred the Way 1.0 a score. In the Jlten's senior dlvisiou Ivhvi, playing their usual iast eombined game, rather easily beat Seinde. Both of the men's junior games were failiy eiose, that betWeen Kiwi Blue and Taradale being a particnlarly fast and open game, with little to ehoose between the two sides. Superior stiek work was the main factor which gave Iviwi a two-goals victory. Westshore junior women held their own well against Taradale but were unablo to stave olf defeat, boing beateu by one goal to nil. BCstilts: — feENlOE WOMEN. . T6 Awa (3) v. Clive (1).— Miss M.
