PALMERSTON N.t This Day. About two miles, or approximately half of tlie surveyed route of four miles, has been constructed of the new road being built over the Ruahine range a short distance north of the Manawatu Gorge. At present 65 men are on ihe Public Works staff engaged on this job. The majority are camped on the Woodville side where the new road begins, but a number still travel daily from the city. The constructed portion now extends well beyond the summit, at 1100 feet, and comes some distance down the western slope towards Ashhurst. It is not yet known when tendera will be called for the new bridge which will be required near Ashhurst. The new road is intended as a stock route and as an emergency traffic highway when the Gorge becomes impassable on account of slips.
