Pakowhai's Birthday The Pakowhai Women's1 Institut® beld its June meeting jn the Chnrch haill on Thursday, Mrs Whittington presiding over a large attedance of members and visitors. Several members from the Meeanee, Twyford and Te Awapuni Institutes jvere ihe guesis of the afternoon and one new member was welcomed. The meeting was opened by ihe smging of the Institute song. June being the Pakowhai Institute's birthday month, arxangaments were made for holding a men'fi evening later bn, ■ , Mrs A. Fourneau read the paper ahe had prepared on the early Pakowhai history and was loudly applauded. The 'Institute decided to enter a team in the forthcoming Drama Festival. Mrs Baird gave a very enjoyable talk on China, taking her hearers through Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nanking, Pekin. She was aocorded a hearty vote of thanks. There was a, splendid exhibition of handicrafts, also thrift articles for the kitchen, The Institute birthday cake was made by Mrs Graham and iced by Mr GledhiH. The six candles were lit and blown out by Mrs Baird, and Mrs Parker, & former president; cut the cake, Pieces of whicb were handed round with the afternoon jtea. The icing on the cake was in pink and green, the Institute colonn. Competitions* for the afternoon resulted: — Something new from someold, Miss Boyle 1, Mrs Mitchell 2, Mrs Russell 3. These articles, along with several other garmentx ,are birthday gifts to the Hawke's Bay Children's Home. Best Bloom, Miss Howard (Jonquil) 1, Mrs Howard (Chrysanthemum) 2, Mrs Brown flceland poppy 3, Mrs Houston (marigold) 4. Mrs Baird gave an interesting elocutionary item, and songs were glven by Miss Rita Howard, Miss Phyllis Boshier and Te Awapuni choir. Each item xeeeived much-appreciated applause. Afternoon tea wag served by the hostesses, Mesdames Cusbing, Gabrielsen, Gledhill and Holmes, and Misses Gabrielson and Holmes. The meeting closed by singing tbe Nation al Anthem.
