The Teleg^aph's Yatican City correspondent says that Cardinal Pacelli, veplying to Hitler's second protest note about Archbishop Mundelein, rciterates that tho Pope refuscs to roprimaud him. Tho Cardinial emphasises that the German Government has not taken steps to prevent German Ministers insultingly aitaeking the Roman Catholie roligion. The Pope points out that, when Archbishop Mundelein referred to Hitler as a former paperhanger? he was expressAg his person opinion, for which the Vatican cannot be rcsponsible. Although a diplomatic rupture be. tween the Pope and Hitler is now feared inevitable, the initiative will be left to Berlin.
