N.Z. SHEEP EXPORT

Saies to , Russian And Japanese Buyers CORRIEDALES BOOM New Zealand sheepbreeders— of Corriedales in particular — are likely to have a record export this season. The Russian delegation made a fairly exhaustive . inspection of the breeds from which it desired to make purehases. but it is understood that no actual business resulted, largely on account of the slieep not conforming in some l-espeets to the standards set by the tSoviet authorities. One condition, for instance, is that the minimum weight of the Romneys should he a certain standard comparable vvith the weight of the British llomney. New Zealand Romneys are not sucli weighty sheep as the . British, for one or two obvious reasons. Size in New Zealand sheep, in any case, is not regarded as rnore important than quality and wool. It is understood that a full report has been supplied tc tlie Russian authorities, and the delegation has returned honie. Members of it are expeeted to return uext year armed witli wider discretion, 'and thcy probably will make purehases. In the meantime two Japanese delpj gations liave beeu operating vbry freely i in Canterbury. Up till a few days ago [ the dclegations, buving for different iu1 lorests, had secured slightly more tlian j 1000 head. all Covriedales. Thcy liud still some more to secure before tlieir books were filled. They were coufined to an average price for their purehases. I.ut were uot afraid to exceed the figurp for any sheep espeeially attractive, ! niaking the cost average ou the lower • priced sheep. i Most of the purclmse- are two-tooili | ewes, which, of course, have Iwen ' nlated, and the romainder ewe ho/tret.s. ! The sheep are intended for Korea, j wh"re the Japanese Government lias sevPral breeding stations. It is expeeted iliafc the first sliipment will be made nbout June 20. Two more Jananese parties are due to arrive shortly, representing other interests. It was stated recently that the probable numher of sheep that would be secured if tlie pnow wero ! right would approach 0000.
