TRAINER DIES
Mr. A. J. Shearsby One of the best known of the older trainers, Mr A. J. Shearsby, died after a short illness at New Plymouth on Saturday at the age of 74. Born in E'ngland Mr Shearsby came to New Zealand at an early age and commenced his association with horses with Mr Henry Redwood at Nelson. He was a ' capable cross-country horseman but it was as a trainer that he was best known. Among the notable winners he trained were Awahuri (Grand National Steeples 1903), Sleight of Hand (Grand National Hurdles 1917), Cherry Blossom (Winter Cup 1916), Bryon (Egmont Oup), Truce (Wanganui Cup), Bourrasque (Manawatu Cup), Orient (Wanganui Steeplechase), Nita (Hawke n Bay Steeples) and Westguard, Queen's Guard, Fashion, Passadena, Makara, Adroit, Nyland and many others. Among th© notahle turf personalities for whom Mr Shearsby trained were Sir Adrian Knox and Mr (now Sir Colin) Stephens in Australia, and in New Zealand the Hon. W, W. Johnson, Messrs. F. Armstrong, G. P. Armstrong, G. P. Donnelly, "Highden", and E. J. Watt.
