Rupture of Diplomatic Relations BERLIN, June 1. It is learned tbat & protest to the Yatican declared that tbe Holy See must realise by its refusai publicly to reprimand Cardinal Mundelein tbat it destroyed conditions necessary for normal relations between Germany and tbe Holy See. Political circles indicate that the Note is intended in tbe nature o.' an ultimatum foresbadowing a rupture of diplomatic relations unless satislactxon is given. ■ * Tbe German Embassy in Washington recently made informal representations to the State Department about the criticisms of Herr Hitler and his policy toward tbe Roman Catbolic Church made by Cardinal Mundelein. Addressing 500 cburchmen, tbe cardinal aslced how a nation of 60,000,000 intelligent people could submit in fear and servitude to an alien Austrian paperbanger and a few associates lilte Dr. Goebbels and General Goering. Tbc cardinal intimated that tbe cbargea againsfc nuns and nionks were made simply for pro paganda purposes. After this the newspaper ' 'Der Angriff," owned by Dr. Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, declared the attack to be a declafation of war and an insult to the whole German nation, including Roman Catholics. The newspaper aslced if the Holy See would permit the cardinal to abuse Herr Hitler. Dr. Goebbels himself gave warning of drastic steps against liigh dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church if Catholics, eitber in Germany or abroad, continued their eriticism of the "morality trials ' ' now being held in Germany. The Yatican, in reply, pointed out that it could not be held responsible for the personal views of individual cardinals and directed attention to the fact that the German Govermnent permitted Press attacks on the Pope. It was further reported Ihat Germany had deeided not to send another ambassador to the Yatican to succeed the present representative who is retiring.
