A NARROW DEFEAT

Our Own Correspondent.)

Waipawa Juniors Go Under To Te Aute

(From

WAIPAWA, Last Night. Following several suecessive wt:ns, tke Waipawa junior team on Saturday afternoon met defeat at the hands of Te Aute College junior team, on the college grounds ,by a margin of two points, the sl'01'6 at flnal wlustle being ^1 to I!). The game provided an excellent display of football, rousing the spectators at timee to a pitch of inte'nse exuitement. The Te Aute team had a considerable advantage an weight in the pack, whife their rearguard on the tlay also showed to greater advantage than the visitors. The Waipawa team, however, gave an excellent display, and were unfortunate ih meeting defeat. For the winners tries were scored by Tait* (3), Ti Tau Rakete, and Manea, three of these being converted by Haimoana. Waipawa 's score came from three tries by McCleary and^one by Sheeran, who also converted two, and a penalty goal by Hopkdns. The Waipawa players in the junior representative trials at Waipukurau on Wednesday next (Davies, Stedman, McCleary and Collett) all gave a good ac~ couut of themselves and certainly deserve inclusion. An omission which is hard to understand is Jim Grant, who, as half-baek, has been playing a sterlong game right through the season and this afternoon gave a flrst-class display. This comment is not intended as a criticism of the junior seleetor, who has probably not had the opportnnity of observing the play of the team on more than one occasion, but oii his standard of play generally Grant is undoubtedly worthy of notice. Another player who is ishowing good form at present ds Fair. The duties of Teferee in the match at Te Aute were carried out by the Rev. J. Hogg.
