Alleged Presentation of False Cheques CASE AT WAIPUKURAU

WAIPUKURAU, This Dav. Pleading not guilty to three charges of fctt.empting to obtain money *and goods by false representation of cheques, Cliarles Frederiek Murphy, alias Lewis, labourer, aged 43 , appeared before Messrs. J. W. Elliott and J-. B, McCormick, J.P. 's, in the Waipukurau Police Court this morning. He was committed for trial at the August sesj siou of the Supreme Cpurt at Napior. , Accused pleadcd guilty to a chargo of obtaining £1 from Jbhn Winlove and Bons, Waipukurau, by false representation of a cheque, and was convicted and discharged. On two further charges, involving false representation Of cheques, ha was remanded to appehr at Gisborne on Junb 22. a Detective-Sergeant H. Nuttall, oi Napier, prosecuted, accused not being represonted by counsel. The evidence revealed that Murphy went into the Hawke's Bay Farrqers' At Waipukurau on May 22 and ordered goods to the value of about £14, pretenting a cheque purporting to be signed by J. K. Reid and drawn on the Natioual Bank of New Zealand at Hast ings. No such person had an accounl at that bank. On the samo day Murphy unsuccessfully tried to cash «. cheque for £5 at the Takapau Hotel, where he was drinkiug. Tbat cheque purported to be signed by J. Newman, ot' Napier, and was drawu on the BauU of Australasia at Napier. Newman, however, had uo accouut with thal bank. A Mrs. Mary Johnston, proprietor of a boarding-houso in' Napier, said that her cheque hook was missing before May 18, and • slie clqiujed » cheque hook which was found on the accused when he was iuterviewcd by Conslable P.
