White Cranes Reappear.

The appear ance of four wlute herons at the lagoon near Waatu pa, West Huntly, is reported by Maori residents, who say they have never seen birds of this kind in the distriet before. They have paired off, and while one pair is shy of the approach of human beings, keeping well out of gunshot range, the other two can be approached to within 50 yards. From Whakatane has come a report of the appearance of a white heron on Mr F. J. Burt's property at Matata. This is helieved to be a bird which has been regularly seen at the spot some years ago, and which has returned after three years' absence. An old Maori saying, "rare as the white crane's flight," suggests that these birds have never been seen in numbers at any one place, and never stay long aear human habitation.
